                                                                                  A brief introduction of ISM

Institute for Structural Materials (ISM), subordinated to Central Iron & Steel Research Institute (CISRI), was established in 1958. ISM is the largest Research & Development center for Steel technologies in China. It consists of 13 groups, one open laboratory, one workshop and its office. Its research filed covers almost all of steel grades: carbon steels, low alloy steels, alloy structural steels, ultra high strength steels, stainless steels, anti-corrosion alloys, refractory steels, tool and die steels, bearing steels, the relevant coating and welding technologies, and alloy design by computation etc. In the past 50 years, many well known experts in the different fields have come from ISM and their achievements have been widely recognized by Chinese steel industries, such as Prof. Sun Zhenbao in the filed of developing alloyed steels, Prof. Liu Jiahe and Prof. Wu Baorong in low alloyed steels, Prof. Lu Shiying in stainless steels, Prof. Zhao Xiancun in high strength stainless steels, Prof. Wu Jiu in dual-phase stainless steels, Prof. Liu Rongzhao in heat-resistant steels, Prof. Wang Shizhang in high-speed steels and Prof. Weng Yuqing in ultrafine steels.

There are more than 100 employees in ISM. Among them, there are 14 professors, 24 senior engineers and 8 PhD supervisors. 20% of employees hold Doctor Degree. In 2004, there were 75 graduate students working for their thesis in ISM.

Among the steel industries and other relevant research institutes, ISM is well known since it takes a leading role on developing steel technologies in China. For the past 50 years, ISM has undertaken a lot of national key projects cooperated with Chinese steel industries. ISM developed many steel grades for aircrafts, nuclear/hydraulic/fuel power plants, chemical industries, construction industries, transportation system and military industries. The outstanding achievements made by ISM lead to many national prizes, for examples, 24 National Invention Prizes and 36 National Prizes for progress in Science and Technology. Particularly in the recent years, ISM has made an important contribution to the very rapid development in Chinese steel production. In 2004, there were 91 projects in total undergoing in ISM and financial support to these research projects was up to 28 million RMB. It produced 83 publications, ten patents last year.

In 2004, National Engineering Research Center for Advanced Steel Technology (NERCAST), which focuses on developing the advanced steelmaking technology at the national level and serves for the entire Chinese steel industries, was established on the basis of ISM and authorized by National Development and Reform Commission. Some employees from ISM are selected as full time working staff in NERCAST since CISRI is the dominant shareholder of NERCAST. The main objective of the Center is to be a platform for advanced steel technology transfer through the promotion of fundamental research, to develop the cutting-edge technology for the better competition of the steel enterprises.

Besides, ISM also actively cooperates with international colleagues on developing steel technologies. For an example, ISM is now collaborating with relevant institutes in Japan and Korea on the Super Steel Project, with European Union on the project of ultrafine grained steels.

ISM owns plenty of facilities for steel researches, including thermal simulator Gleeble, impact tester, MTS, X-ray diffraction analyzer, optical microscope, SEM, TEM, dilatometer, heat treatment furnaces, welding and coating facilities. In the near future, ISM is going to upgrade them and aiming at setting up the state-of-the-art facilities.

Both Chinese steel market and steel production technologies have been constantly changing particularly in the recent time. We recognize that ISM must continue to evolve to take the challenges from the fast Chinese economic growth. Therefore, we are determined to be open to the international community and act as a bridge for the technology transfer from the world leading steel producers into China, and attract the talented scientists with the ultimate aim of making ISM a source of invention and advanced technologies.
